Deaf Women IN SPORT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Running from early June until September is UK Deaf Sport's latest project aiming to get 100 more women and girls engaged in sport and physical activity.

Deaf & Hearing Trailblazers have been tasked to set up a programme of workshops and training to meet the diverse need of this particular group. The activities are aimed at four groups of Deaf women who are:

= Wanting to get involved in sport and physical activity but are facing barriers.

= Sports coaches and activity leaders, teachers.

= Already leaders and volunteers in sports organisations.

= Interested in becoming leaders and volunteers.

The information gathered from these activities will be used by UK Deaf Sport to plan for the delivery of further work to make sure that Deaf women and girls have greater opportunties and life-long participation in sport and physical activity.

2019 -2020 A review

Recently, we came to the end of another financial year for Deaf & Hearing Trailblazers CIC. This year has seen us make quantum leaps in the way we have been delivering our courses and consultation activities.

Like everyone else, the dawn of 2020 brought renewed hope at the start of another new decade and we were ready to deliver on our plans. What little did we all know!

In February the days running up to the Leadership Summit at Loughboorugh University, we became increasingly worried about a number of things - primarily the health and safety of all the delegates and other participants. But then EVERYTHING that was non-essential to life went into lockdown to save the NHS and the spread of the virus.

Overnight, all our plans to bring people together for the summit and other training activities dissappeared.

But we can back quickly.

This year we have learnt how to use all the best features of Zoom to deliver 1-to-1 work-coaching, professional training for groups of 2 - 10 people online and our most complicated project was to deliver a strategic away-day for one organisation who were able to bring some of their staff into their covid-safe offices and they all worked with our facilitator who was based at home. Finally, there was also the added complexity of including some staff who could not aviod the lockdown tier regulations who also had to join in remotely!

By planning ahead and working closely with our clients we were able to remain flexible and innovative which enabled us solve challenges quickly - we had a great day!

In the last few months, we have been having some exciting conversations with customers and planning some excellent projects for next year!

2022 will definitely be our busiest year to date and we will deal with whatever the pandemic and lockdown restrictions throw at us!

Hope you all have a safe Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

How to start making changes that are fit for the future

Some of the organisations that we have been working with recently have approached us because they have decided that they need to change their legal structure to make sure they are fit for the future.

It is important that organisations and business have the right legal structures that will allow them to provide essential community services and deliver in the way that suits them and their stakeholders best.

In the beginning, when we are facilitating leadership teams who believe that they need to make changes. We ask them a set of questions to set the scene:

  1. What has been your expereince so far?
  2. How is your organisation currently structured (legally)?
  3. Why is it structured that way?
  4. Does the structure work with your vision and objectives?
  5. Are the changes the best way for you now and in the future - why?

It is only by digging deep can you get to understand the nature of an organisation, where it is currently and the options available to it for the future.

Deaf Businesses prepare for the future

Deaf & Hearing Trailblazers has begun working with deaf community businesses and organisations, assisting their leadership teams with thinking space to create  short-term and long-term strategic planning that will prepare them for the post-pandemic future.

Using our training expertise, we are guiding and facilitating people through the detailed processes of strategic planning for the future.

Each organisation is different in its age, size and structure, whilst there is no single system that suits all, there are important fundamentals to be worked through.

We have also taken the opportunity to review our own position as a training provider and have also given ourselves a vision for the future in 2030. Very soon we will be sharing our plans with a select group of supporters and stakeholders and asking for their critical views and opinions. We will then use the feedback to make further adjustments to our 10-year plans and how we are going to achieve them.

Early in the new year, 2021, we hope to share this with you all on this website.

Pandemic impacts on deaf sport

Stuart Harrison, one of the Deaf & Hearing Trailblazers directors has been part of the planning team preparing to host the World Deaf Golf Championships that would have taken place this month in Warwickshire.

Unfortunately, this had to be cancelled along with sports events all around the world. This raises uncertainty about the return of sport in the future - making it very difficult for sports leaders to plan ahead.

Deaf & Hearing Trailblazers is a CIC (Community Interest Company) - it is run as a business, with all profits going back into the business or community.

What you may be surprised to learn is how many charities, societies and CIC's run sport and physical activity in the UK.

Community Leisure UK is a members association of organisations which run public leisure sport and cultural services. They have 100 members running over 3700 facilities employing 46,000 staff - a big number of these are 18-34 year olds. They are supported by 17,000 volunteers and provided services to 233m visitors last year.

At the moment things are looking very difficult for Community Leisure UK members. 35 libraries, 85 leisure centres and 24 swimming pools  are facing the risk of permanent closure in the future as a result of the pandemic.

Whilst the whole world will be impacted by the pandemic, we do have particular concerns for deaf people around the world who are already limited in their access to public and private services of all kinds and what the future has in store for them.
